Mel Turpin Commits Suicide

Mel Turpin, former NBA player and All-American Kentucky center, committed suicide Thursday, authorities said. He was 49. Police and the coroner were called to his North Lexington house Thursday afternoon on a personal injury call. They found Melvin Turpin dead. Coroner Gary Ginn says that Melvin Turpin commits suicide, but would not say how. He also would not say whether Mel Turpin left behind a suicide note.

Neighbor Amanda McFadden said Turpin always seemed happy.

“He never looked upset. He kept a smile on his face, just a good person,” she said.

The 6-foot-11 Turpin, dubbed “The Big Dipper,” was an All-Southeastern Conference player for the Wildcats from 1980-84. He led Kentucky to the SEC championship in 1984.

The center helped lead the Wildcats to three consecutive regular-season SEC titles. He averaged a career-high 15.2 points per game in 1983-84 and shot 74.5 percent from the field.

Mel Turpin was the sixth player selected in the 1984 NBA draft that included Michael Jordan, Hakeem Olajuwon and Charles Barkley, but never had the NBA success of those future stars.

Mel Turpin was picked by the Washington Bullets, then traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers. His best season was 1985-86 when he averaged 13.7 points and 7.0 rebounds per game, but he was out of the league four years later.

    Fan Falls From Upper Deck

Fan Falls From Upper Deck at Rangers Ballpark — A fan reaching out from the upper deck for a foul ball at Rangers Ballpark fell to the section below and was injured in the fifth inning of the Texas Rangers-Cleveland Indians game tonight. The game was delayed for more than 15 minutes as emergency crews attended to the fallen spectator. Both fans and ballplayers appeared to be shaken by the accident. “It just rattled everybody,” Fox Sports Southwest sportscaster Josh Lewin said on air.

The Rangers’ Nelson Cruz fouled the ball into the upper deck club level along the first-base line. A witness said the ball sailed above the fan in section 235. He reached out to catch it as it caromed back toward the field, went over the railing, tried to catch himself on the lower suite level and flipped backward onto the seats about 30 feet below.

Fox Sports Southwest, which was broadcasting the game, reported that the fan had been taken to John Peter Smith Hospital.

Rangers executive vice president/communications John Blake later said that the spectator was stabilized, “able to move all his extremities and was responsive to paramedics.”

Four other fans were injured and were being treated at the stadium, Rangers officials said.
