Sumatra Earthquake 2010 – Magnitude 7.8 Shook Aceh, Northern Sumatra


On early Wednesday, 7 April 2010, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake has rattled Aceh and its surrounding areas on the Northern Sumatra Island. Sumatra Earthquake 2010 is prompting a tsunami watch for the areas.

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that the Aceh earthquake 2010 struck at 5:15 a.m. and was centered at around 60 kilometers southwest of Sinabang, Aceh, at 24 kilometers beneath the surface.

Antara state news agency reported panic stirred among residents in Banda Aceh, Medan and Riau and also blackouts in Banda Aceh.

So far, there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries after Nothern Sumatra earthquake 2010.

For addition, BMKG also recorded two aftershocks, each measuring 5.1 and 5.2 on the Richter scale, at 5:26 and 5:28 a.m..

Moderate quakes have often rock the Aceh province , which was the worst hit area when the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami struck.

    what a shocking event…i heard that news at about 7 o’clock am in Philippines only today….we must pray to God to protect us from danger….maybe God’s coming is soon..
