North Maluku Earthquake: Magnitude 6.1 Struck Eastern Indonesia

A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.1 has struck eastern Indonesia. The quake strikes North Maluku province, 1,500 miles from Jakarta. So far, there have been no immediate reports on the damage or the victims caused by one of the latest natural disasters on the country.

According to Associated Press, there’s no tsunami warning issued after North Maluku earthquake.

The U.S. Geological Survey says Saturday’s quake was centered near Obi island at a depth of about 33 miles (53 kilometers).

Indonesia’s Meteorology, Geophysics and Climate Agency measured the quake at 6.4 magnitude.

Indonesia rests on a series of fault lines that make the archipelago nation one of the most earthquake-prone. A quake last year killed more than 1,000 people on Sumatra. Another off Indonesia’s coast caused the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami that killed 230,000.
